There is a legitimate need to be able to use 64-bit Java. Unless you're wedded to OpenOffice.org, try LibreOffice. Base (the database component) relies completely on Java technologies to run, but other programs (like Writer, Calc and Impress) only need Java for special functionality. You may also have 64 bit versions which would have installed in c:\Program Files\Java and these will not work with LibreOffice.
